Performance – subtleties and nuances
Music is an amazing, subtle world of human feelings, thoughts, experiences. The world, which has attracted millions of listeners to concert halls for centuries, inspires composers and performers. The mystery of music is that we are enthusiastically listening to the sounds written by the composer’s hand, but presented to us by the work of the performer. The magic of performing music is more than one century popular. The sequence of people who want to learn how to play an instrument, sing, and compose is still not decreasing. There are circles, specialized music schools, music academies, art schools and circles …
And they all teach one thing – to perform. WHAT IS THE PERFORMANCE MAGIC CONCLUDED IN? Performance is not a mechanical translation of musical icons (notes) into sounds and not a reproduction, a copy of an existing masterpiece. Music is a rich world with its own language. The language that carries information hidden: in musical notation (sound-pitch and rhythmic); in dynamic nuances; in melismatics; in strokes; in pedaling, etc. Sometimes music is compared to science. Naturally, in order to perform a work, one must master the concepts of music theory. However, the translation of musical notation into real music is a sacred, creative art that cannot be measured or calculated. The skill of the interpreter is manifested: in the competent perception of the musical text written by the composer; in delivering musical content to the listener.
Notes for a musician-performer are a code, information that allows one to penetrate and unravel the composer’s plan, style of the writer, image of music, the logic of the structure of the form, etc. The outstanding teacher of the Soviet school L. Nikolaev, the author of the famous manual “Piano playing”, compared musical notation with a geographical map. He said: “A note is as far from real sound as a map from a landscape.” Sound and recording are two planes that only the imagination of the artist-artist can connect. Surprisingly, any interpretation can be created only once. Each new performance will be different from the previous one. Well, isn’t that magic?
I AM ABLE TO PLAY, BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO EXECUTE! It is natural that, how many ingenious performances, so many mediocre ones. Many performers could not comprehend the magic of musical sounds. Having studied at a music educational institution, they closed the door to the music world forever. To understand the subtleties and nuances of performance will help
TALENT, KNOWLEDGE AND LABOR. In the trinity of these concepts, it is important not to overshadow the composer’s intent with its execution. The interpretation of music is a delicate process where it is important not how YOU play Bach, but HOW you play Bach. In the issue of performance training, there is no need to “open a bicycle”. The scheme is simple: study the history of musical art; master musical literacy; Improve your performing techniques and technique; listen to music and attend concerts, compare interpretations of various artists and find what is close to you; penetrate the style of composers, study biographies and themes of art that inspire artists who create music; While working on the play, try to answer the question: “What moved the composer when creating this or that masterpiece?”; learn from others, attend master classes, seminars, lessons of various teachers; try to compose yourself; cultivate yourself in everything! Performance is an expressive disclosure of the content of music, and what this content will be is up to you! We wish you success!
