How to record songs in the studio?
Sooner or later, many musical groups in their work come to a point where, for the further promotion and development of the group, it is necessary to record several songs, so to speak, to make a demo recording. Recently, with the development of modern technologies to make such a record at home seems quite real, but the quality of such records, of course, leaves much to be desired. Also, without certain knowledge and skills of high-quality recording and mixing sound, the result may not be exactly what the musicians had originally hoped for. And it’s not too serious to provide a “makeshift” disc with poor recording quality on radio or various festivals.
Therefore, recording a demo is necessary only at a professional studio. Many musicians, rehearsing for days in garages and basements, have a fairly good level of play, but they can’t even imagine how songs are recorded in the studio. Therefore, we move smoothly to the first point – we choose a recording studio. CHOOSING A STUDIO Naturally, one should not go to the first recording studio that comes across and donate money for renting the equipment provided. For starters, you can ask your friends musicians where and at what studios they record their work. Then, having decided on several options, and preferably, especially if the recording will be carried out for the first time, choosing among the recording studios is not an expensive category. Since during the recording of the demo in the studio, musicians very often begin to look at their music from a different angle.
Someone will play the game differently, someone will change the ending, and somewhere the tempo of the composition will have to be changed. All this, of course, is a great and positive experience that can be relied on in the future. Therefore, the ideal option is an inexpensive studio. It is also necessary to talk with the sound engineer, find out what equipment their studio provides, listen to the materials that were recorded on it. But to draw conclusions based only on the equipment provided is not worth it, as there are inexpensive studios equipped with only the most necessary. A sound engineer has golden hands and the output material is no worse than in expensive studios with a huge amount of various equipment. There is another opinion that you need to record only in expensive recording studios with lots of equipment, but this is a personal matter for everyone.
The only thing is that for a beginner group who is recording for the first time, this option is certainly not advisable. RECORDING SONGS Before arriving at a recording studio, you must consult with your representative to find out what you need to bring with you. Usually for guitarists it’s their lotions and guitars, sticks for a drummer, a set of iron. Although it happens that for recording it is better to use the provided studio hardware, but sticks are required. And yet, the most important thing that is required of a drummer is the ability to play his entire part under the metronome, from beginning to end. If he has never played this before in his life, you need to practice a few weeks before recording, and preferably months. If you need to change the strings on the guitar, you should do this a day before recording, otherwise they will “swim” when recording a song in the studio, that is, they need constant adjustment. So, we proceed directly to the recording itself. First of all, drums are usually recorded under the metronome.
In the intervals between the recording of a single instrument, operational reduction is performed. Thanks to which the bass recording is already under the drums. The next instrument in the queue is prescribed a rhythm guitar, respectively, already for two parts – drums and bass guitars. Then the solo and all remaining instruments are recorded. After recording the parts of all the instruments, the sound engineer is engaged in preliminary mixing. Then the vocals are already recorded on the mixed material. This whole process takes a fairly long amount of time. Firstly, before recording, each instrument is separately configured and checked. Secondly, far from the first take, the musician will give out the perfect part of his instrument, at least he will have to play two or three times. And all this time, of course, is included in the hourly fee for renting a studio.
Of course, a lot depends on the experience of the musicians and on what time the group is recorded at the studio. If such an experience for the first time and not one musician has no idea how to record songs in the studio, then recording one instrument will last about one hour, based on the fact that for the first time musicians will often make mistakes and rewrite their parts. If the game of the musicians of the rhythm section is well-coordinated and there are no errors during the game, you can record the drum part, bass guitar and rhythm guitar immediately in order to save. Such a recording sounds more lively and dense, which gives its interest to the composition. You can try an alternative – live recording – this is if the money is generally tight.
